Why use Open Source?
- You’ll save money
Open Source Learning Management technology does not require a large up front cost, and you will not have to pay continuing licensing fees over the years you use the system. - You get a rich set of features to support learning
In contrast to large corporations, open source development communities are agile. They quickly and continuously improve the software and add engaging features. Communities often include faculty and staff from other universities like you who have the same needs, and the same concerns with proprietary software. - You have the code, so you can change it if you want
Unlike commercial LMS software, you have the rights to alter the software in any way you like. If you don’t like how the quiz feature functions, you can change it. If you want to tweak how something displays, you can. There is no waiting for the next release, no wondering if your feature made their list of things to build.
Zumia consultants have been providing service and support for universities deploying open source software for a number of years. We were recently funded by the Hewlett Foundation to conduct a comparative analysis of a variety of Open Source Learning Management Systems. We have consultants who can help you evaluate your options. We have open source developers who can provide service and technical support. We would love to have a conversation with you before you become tied to a proprietary system.
What is content engineering?
Learning and content are inseparably connected. In fact, it could be said that learning is the ability to apply the correct content at the correct time, in the correct manner.
The problem trainers and educators have always faced is taking all of the information a student must know, and presenting it to them in such a way that is clear, manageable, and achievable. Content engineering is not simply displaying information or making it searchable, rather it is the systematic organization, design, and delivery of content. Information can be taken in any form (print, web based, pdf), organized, and presented in such a way to help a student learn.
Some content must be learned, other content must be easy to find and reference. The basic premise behind content engineering is to provide you with the tools to help your learners meet the expectations given to them. These include discoverable, meaningful, direct content paired with a number of tools built to help learners absorb and engage with your knowledge base.
Content engineering is not just instructional design, nor is it just putting documents on a web page. It is instructional design, technology, social networks, all working together to make your content work.
